Financial coaching for couples

A Buzz money coach works with both of you, online, to agree how the household money runs: who pays what, what you are saving towards, and the decisions you keep putting off. You do not have to agree with each other before you start.

Agreed in writing at the start

If we work with a couple, we do not keep one partner's financial secret from the other. That is agreed in writing at the start, before anything else happens.

Both of you see the same figures, and every action agreed in a session has a name and a date against it.

Three ways couples run money

The first session usually starts with which of these you use now, and whether it still suits you both.

Everything joint

One pot for everything. Simple to run, and every personal purchase is visible to the other person.

Everything separate

Each of you pays your share from your own money. It can leave the lower earner with far less to spend.

A joint pot plus your own

A joint account for joint costs, paid into in proportion to income, and personal money each.

The guide to money arguments between couples works through the proportional split with figures.

A session for two

Before

  • Each of you takes the two-minute money type tool on your own.
  • Connect the accounts you want included to the free Healthcheck. You can add more than one account.

In the session

  • Online, with both of you on the call.
  • Your spending in four numbers: committed, living, lifestyle and saving.
  • The goals you share and the ones that are yours alone.

After

  • One to three actions, each with a name and a date.
  • The next session starts from what you agreed.

Couples planning for a baby, a separation or caring for a parent will find the figures in money before and after a baby, money when you separate and caring for a parent.

Common questions

Do we both have to come?

Coaching works best with both of you in the session. If one of you wants to start alone, the first session can plan how to bring the other person in.

What if one of us keeps spending hidden?

If we work with a couple, we do not keep one partner's financial secret from the other. That is agreed in writing at the start, before anything else happens. The Healthcheck shows real transactions, so both of you work from the same figures.

Is this couples counselling?

No. A money coach works on budgets, goals and the actions you agree. If a session shows a problem that needs a counsellor, your coach says so. If one partner controls the other's access to money, that is economic abuse: the National Domestic Abuse Helpline is 0808 2000 247, free and open 24 hours.

Can you tell us whose pension to pay into?

That is regulated advice, and Buzz Money Coach is not authorised to give it. A coach can show what the household can spare each month and what each of you holds now. If you want a recommendation we can introduce you to Equity & General, who are authorised by the FCA.

What does it cost?

Single sessions are £39 for half an hour or £69 for an hour. Ongoing coaching is £69 a month with a session every month, and you can cancel any time. See how much a financial coach costs.

Coaching is not regulated financial advice. Choosing a pension, an investment, a mortgage or a protection policy is regulated advice, and Buzz Money Coach is not authorised to give it.
