Budgeting coach for adults

A Buzz budgeting coach works from your real bank transactions, sorted into four numbers: committed, living, lifestyle and saving. Each session agrees one to three changes with dates, and the next session checks what happened. The Healthcheck that sorts your spending is free, and a 45-minute session is £39.

Committed

Rent or mortgage, bills, insurance, repayments.

Living

Food, fuel, getting about.

Lifestyle

Everything you chose to spend on.

Saving

Savings and money put aside for goals.

Your committed costs are your floor. Knowing them helps with decisions such as whether you can drop a day a week or whether the mortgage is comfortable.

When a budget keeps breaking

A budget built from guesses can drift away from real spending within a fortnight. Irregular costs such as car insurance, the MOT and Christmas arrive in lumps and break a monthly plan. A coach starts from what your statements show, gives each irregular cost a monthly amount, and agrees one change at a time.

The guide to why budgets fail works through five causes with an example. If your income changes month to month, read budgeting with an irregular income.

Common questions

What does a budgeting coach do?

Works through your real spending with you, agrees one to three changes with dates, and checks at the next session what happened. A coach does not manage your money or tell you which products to use.

Do I have to connect my bank?

It is the quickest way to start from real figures, and the connection is read-only: nobody at Buzz can move money. If you prefer to start without it, take the free Financial Freedom Score, which is self-rated.

How many sessions will I need?

Monthly is the standard. Fortnightly can help for the first couple of months if you are rebuilding a budget, then drops back to monthly. Single sessions are £39 for half an hour or £69 for an hour, and ongoing coaching is £69 a month.

I'm behind on bills. Is a budgeting coach the right help?

Go to free debt help first. If you are missing payments, using credit for essentials or hearing from creditors, StepChange and National Debtline give free, independent help and can deal with creditors for you. Coaching can help once the pressure is off.

Can we do this as a couple?

Yes. Connect both of your accounts to the Healthcheck and come to the session together. Financial coaching for couples explains how it works.

Coaching is not regulated financial advice. Choosing a pension, an investment, a mortgage or a protection policy is regulated advice, and Buzz Money Coach is not authorised to give it. If you want a recommendation we can introduce you to Equity & General, who are authorised by the FCA. Sources: Session details from the Buzz Money Coach Healthcheck and coaching pages.
